Empowering California Students: Reflex and Frax Boost CAASPP- Aligned Math Skills
According to extensive research, two of the biggest challenges in elementary math are also the strongest predictors of future mathematics achievement: math fact fluency and fractions.
Math fact fluency frees up students’ working memory and positively affects standardized test performance. Research shows that knowledge of fractions significantly impacts students’ understanding of algebra and advanced math. Reflex (for math facts) and Frax (for fractions) provide engaging and effective solutions to help students master foundational skills and prepare for dynamic digital testing environments like the CAASPP assessment.
What about Reflex and Frax in California?
Reflex has been trusted by educators and loved by over 10 million students in all 50 states and 25+ countries and since the launch of Frax in 2021, even more students are experiencing math success with ExploreLearning solutions.

Voices from California Classrooms
“I am so thankful for Reflex. It has reached many students who did not particularly enjoy math. I have one student who did not like multiplication and did poorly on her fluency tests, but now she’s excelling on them.”
-Teacher, Diocese of Monterey, CAVoices from California Classrooms
“Every day is a success story with Reflex! The kids LOVE it and ask if they can play every day. Even my kids who are at 100% fluency still want to play and see how high they can get their scores.”
-Teacher, Hillsborough City School District, CAVoices from California Classrooms
“My kids absolutely love Frax! Their abilities vary, but ALL my students feel success with Frax. They have a much better grasp on fractions overall and it has really made a difference in what we are able to do in class.”
-Teacher, Redwood Preparatory Charter School, CAVoices from California Classrooms
“We tried Frax last year and loved how quickly students were able to move through the missions. With both Reflex and Frax, we liked the level of competition created to help students keep engaged.”
-Teacher, CACalifornia Success Story
“After three months of getting the Green Light every week for five days, my students had significant fact fluency, which supported academic improvement toward grade-level math.”
-Renia Snyder. 6th-grade special education teacher at Palm Middle School in Moreno Valley Unified School District, CA

About Reflex
Grades 2+
Built on a fact family approach, Reflex uses a variety of explicit strategies to introduce new facts, including the commutative property, rule-based patterns, and visual models.
As a student progresses in a Reflex game, the system continuously adjusts the difficulty of fact retrieval based on their progress, providing an adequate level of challenge within the limits of current abilities.

About Frax
Grades 3+
Frax is an engaging, zero-entry program, allowing all learners to gain fractions knowledge and confidence as they complete carefully scaffolded missions.
Frax uses the number line as the central representation tool to help students foster an understanding of fraction magnitude and perform advanced work with fractions. When used before a fractions unit, Frax can propel student learning forward.
Pilot InformationReflex and Frax bring evidence-based results.
Reflex and Frax use research-proven methods and innovative technology to provide the most effective math solutions available. Schools and districts have seen serious results with Reflex and Frax to close achievement gaps and propel students forward in math in a short amount of time.
A two-year study revealed the significant positive impact of Reflex and Frax on student achievement—even for those most at risk. 2nd graders who scored two or more grade levels below their peers in math improved by an average of 11 percentile points when they used Reflex, compared to 5 percentile points in non-users. When those same Reflex users advanced to 3rd grade and used Frax, students were 2.5x more likely to reach on-grade level math proficiency by the end of 3rd grade compared to non-users.
