Collaboration Results in an Update to Cell Structure Gizmo

Making math and science serious fun for students takes serious feedback from educators on what really works in the classroom. Recently, a user pointed out an error in our definition of cytoplasm in the Cell Structure Gizmo.

According to one definition, the cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance in the cell that exists between the organelles. The actual definition of cytoplasm, or at least the most common usage among biologists, is that the cytoplasm includes everything between the nuclear membrane and the cell membrane, including all of the organelles. The jelly-like fluid is actually called cytosol. However, many textbooks, websites, and even scientific papers still describe cytoplasm as fluid only.

Using the educator’s feedback and our research, we updated the Cell Structure Gizmo to highlight everything between the cell and nuclear membranes when cytoplasm is selected. We also revised all of the associated descriptions in the Gizmo and lesson materials.

Every user comment and suggestion is carefully considered. That’s why we created avenues to bring our users into the process. It’s as simple as submitting product feedback through our Gizmos Support Form. For teachers who would like to be more involved, Collab Crew is a partnership where the ExploreLearning team and educators work together to design solutions that are as effective as they are fun for learning (and teaching!).
