Higher-Level Training: Teaching for Understanding in Math

Description

Teaching for Understanding in Math is designed to help participants use Gizmos when teaching students to reason mathematically and develop a deeper understanding of math concepts.

Format

The course is designed as a six-hour* onsite session. The instructor will discuss and model best practices for inquiry-based teaching with Gizmos in mathematics. Teachers will learn how to use Gizmos to develop effective mathematics instruction that strengthens students' mathematical understanding. Participants will also have time for individual exploration and development of lesson plans with the instructor. A review of the major features and functions of the ExploreLearning website, focusing on any participant questions or difficulties, will also be included.

Each participant will need access to an Internet connected computer.

* Three-hour workshops are also available. These workshops provide more limited time for participant exploration.

Expected Outcomes

Course participants will:

  • Understand inquiry instruction in mathematics and develop skill in using it.
  • Learn best practices for using Gizmos in mathematics classrooms, where students can experiment, visualize and draw conclusions about the mathematics involved.
  • Plan mathematics lessons using inquiry and appropriate Gizmos, and share lesson ideas with colleagues.
  • Increase familiarity with Gizmo website features.

Teaching for Understanding in Math is designed for mathematics teachers in grades 3-12 who have completed Initial Training and would like advanced training on incorporating best practices for inquiry and Gizmos into their mathematics teaching.
