Seed Germination

UPDATED

Perform experiments with several seed types to see what conditions yield the highest germination (sprouting) rate. Three different types of seeds can be studied, and the temperature, water and light in the germination chamber can be controlled. No two trials will have the same result so repeated trials are recommended.

Assessment Questions (5):

  1. Based on the graph below, during which day did the most seeds sprout?

    Germination graph
  2. Germination experiments for a single seed type were run under four different conditions. The graphs below show the results of each experiment. Which graph represents the experiment that had the most optimal conditions for that type of seed?

    Four graphs
  3. Imagine that you know the ideal germination conditions for a new seed type, and the percentage of sprouts expected under these conditions. Which of the following statements will be true?
  4. You are a farmer whose farmland is cool, moist, and shady. (Assume that these growing conditions are equivalent to 80 drops/hr of water, 10% light, and a temperature of 13°C in the Gizmo.) You are thinking about planting seeds like Seed A in the Gizmo. You will turn a profit if at least 50% of your seeds become sprouts. Are you most likely to make money or lose money on this crop?
  5. You are given a new type of seed (Seed D). Which method do you think would be the best for finding the ideal conditions for sprouting seeds of type D?
